IoT Monitoring for Electric Utilities
RiOT data engine/ SkyView HMI
RiOT Engine is an agnostic data converter/data processor software platform that can run on Linux and Windows. Popular industry communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP, SNMP and OPC are already implemented and new ones can be added by IoT International, or the user. What differentiates the RiOT technology from the traditional RTU’s and data converters are as follows:
1 Open architecture to allow the users to develop their own communication interfaces and add to the system
2 Optimized for wireless communication media with built in provisions such as when to send the data, how to send the data, switch destinations, smart recovery of data communication outages by preserving field timestamped data
3 Built in visualization tools to use as an affordable local HMI
4 Built in scripting engine to write C# scripts to process the data on the fly
5 Add-on libraries to link to the scripting engine to add more complex calculations and call from the scripts
6 Modern data interfaces such as MQTT, Rest API’s and writing to relational and time-series databases
7 Secure local Web Server to monitor the process values and the application status locally
TLS and OAuth for remote data communication
8 Scalable, secure and affordable, no future upgrades or seat licenses required.
SkyView is an agnostic analytics platform that can run in the cloud or on premise. What differentiates the SkyView technology from the traditional systems are as follows:
1 MQTT or Rest API interfaces to receive data
2 TLS and OAuth
3 Geographical representation of the assets and live presentation of the status on the map
4 Creating charts, Dynamic Graphics, SOE’s and reports on the fly
5 Add dashboards on the fly
6 Smart notifications such as Change of Status, Inactivity Alarms, Comm Problems, Dead-banding, Delayed reports, etc.
7 Periodic summary reports emailed to the relevant staff
8 Role based security and functionality
9 Auto population of compliance forms
10 The end client can use SkyView on prem, on their own cloud service and in a multi-tenant scenario hosted by us.
Electric Utilities Applications
Some areas the RiOT/SkyView Technology could fit the business of larger utilities are as follows:
1 Critical Distribution Assets such as reclosers: RiOT engine can be used embedded in a Linux hardened hardware to play the role of the data concentrator/data processor next to the Reclosers or Substation assets and report data as the main or redundant path. We engineer and provide a turn-key solution (RiOT Engine bundled with a Linux hardware) for the data communication media the utility is currently using: MAS Radio, Fiber, Mesh, Cellular, etc.
2 Other Distribution Assets such Cap Banks, Transformers, etc. where data is used for applications such as Voltage Control or Maintenance: Similar to [1], we provide a turn-key solution (see above) to provide data communication and Edge processing
3 Third-party distributed generators or assets such as renewable generators or large loads: Similar to [1], we provide a turn-key solution (see above) to provide data communication and Edge processing. Unlike [1], the data path may not be linked to the utility secure network. We can collect the data in a time series accessed by the utility and the customer and provide visualization, notifications and reporting via SkyView.
4 Using RiOT Engine at the head-end to process and distribute data between different operations and third-party business applications such as OMS, EMS, Historian, etc.
5 Using SkyView at the head-end as the visualization/analytics and dashboarding tool
6 Remote monitoring of assets or watersheds. RiOT Box (below) turnkey solution is NEMA4 enclosure with gateway, power supply, backup battery, solar panel and either cellular data or satellite transmitter. Suitable for remote locations with sensor bundles or temporary installations.
