Situational Awareness for Business

Situational Awareness is the foundation for successful decision making. Taking in information from your environment, understanding what it means and projecting out its future status. This skill lets you form a decision, and then the best action. Without this process, the time and ability to make the correct decisions are wasted.

The military knows this, so do pilots, nuclear plants and other critical processes. We can all benefit from a better decision making process. One that takes in all the information possible so you can make an informed decision. In business, this has been very difficult, if you are running a Hospital, or factory or any facility, the information is just not available. If you have a new LEED Platinum building, you could have everything thing at your fingertips. Most of us are not that lucky, we have facilities built up over generations. Hundreds of disparate systems, some producing easy data, some hard to get data, and most no data. Situational awareness was a far off dream, with no way to get all the needed data and no way to analyze, trend, report and protect the data in one spot.

The Industrial Internet of Things was supposed to solve this. In many ways it can, but it lacks one critical feature, uniformity. Data comes from millions of sensors and devices with a long list of data formats and platforms. Designed initially to help a manufacturer get data from one point to another, in an era with no standards. Your older assets may produce zero data, but are still critical to your operations. How do you solve this? The RiOT Agnostic Data Engine, it can take in data from a long list of data formats, and convert it to a common flavor of Linux. MODBUS, SNMP, OPC, MODBUS RTU, MQTT, ASCII, OCR’s, CANbus, DNP3 etc. they are all used to turn the RiOT engine into a protocol converter. Giving you the first time you can see everything in your system. Utilities to Federal Command Centers, all with vastly different needs and equipment are using the same data engine to pull in all their sensor data .

How it works, the engine is normally housed in a gateway, with multiple input and output methods, including cellular data, or even satellite. The gateway acts as an edge computing device, normalizing and scripting data, so only the critical information is passed up to the secure IoT cloud. Here you access the data on the SkyView HMI dashboard. You configure the data streams to help you manage everything better. What is working, what is not, getting a text to alert you a server room/ plasma temperature is rising, your generator is almost out of oil or that your ancient elevator has stopped working. Auto populating compliance forms, seeing where your electrical grid is out from your phone, really anything that would provide you with situational awareness.

By finally seeing everything important in your organization, then being able to manage it all in one spot, you have your first chance at true Situational Awareness. A chance to make assets run longer, make tenants happier, beat your budget, improve safety, whatever your personal battle plan is, we can make it happen.
